Veteran’s in the Job Market – Military translations on resumes

Matthew Liptak | September 28, 2009

As I mentioned before, I got out of the Marines over 8 years ago and had no one guiding me, assisting me or even caring about where I was going or worse what my resume looked like. I was told to buy a Resume Guide (If my combat boots had a parachute I think it was called) and that was where I would get the help to do my resume. This book was okay, but what can you get out of a book? It was a military retiree’s firsthand opinion of how a resume should be done and how the military experience should translate. Come to find out, it was of no use at all. It did not give me enough information on how to best format my resume or even how to fully translate what I did in the Marines into civilian terms.

So you think you are the only one in the job market? Think again!

I speak to on average probably around 20-40 people looking for work a day, and for the most part, a majority of them see the writing on the wall and realize this is one of the toughest job markets we have ever seen. However, there are a smaller minority of job seekers, I’ll call them the “high on the horse” or “living in a cave” seeker, that still think the market is not that bad and worse, they are one of the few of their kind searching for a new job. Scary right?

Effective job searching using social media

As technology expands, company Human Resources departments and staffing agencies are starting to get savvy to how to search for that perfect candidate. They are of course sticking to the general large job boards but as positions become more specialized, they are turning to social networking outlets such as Twitter and Facebook etc to attract canddiates.

The Resume – A foot in the door during a tough job market

Matthew Liptak | September 9, 2009

With a market as tight and as tough as this one, the resume is the single most important piece to your pathway of job landing success. Do not take it for granted and spend time creating a well documented background story to get you to the next step. If you take this lightly, this comes across in how serious you are taking your job search.
