WHY SHUT UP?

To remain silent is literally impossible…

Happy 234th Birthday US Marine Corps

Matthew Liptak | November 9, 2009

Marines,

I would like to take a moment to wish each and every one of you a Happy Birthday! Please take a moment to think about your fellow devil dogs that are still serving in “every clime and place”!

The definition of a Veteran

Matthew Liptak | November 9, 2009

As the day approaches every year, I always take time to stress to friends and colleagues the significance of the day. I must admit there is no better way to describe it then to add this definition to my blog since this clearly says it all. I want to thank the US Marine Corps Force Recon Association and Father Denis O’Brien for supplying me with this piece:

Veterans in the Job Market – How to discuss military in an interview

Matthew Liptak | October 6, 2009

For a veteran it is even more difficult then a civilian in interviews because you are discussing a topic which can sound like a foreign language to many hiring managers. When I first got out of the military, I was so used to titles and ranks and caught up with the formality and process of the interview, I lost touch with what I was really there for.

Veteran’s in the Job Market – Military translations on resumes

Matthew Liptak | September 28, 2009

As I mentioned before, I got out of the Marines over 8 years ago and had no one guiding me, assisting me or even caring about where I was going or worse what my resume looked like. I was told to buy a Resume Guide (If my combat boots had a parachute I think it was called) and that was where I would get the help to do my resume. This book was okay, but what can you get out of a book? It was a military retiree’s firsthand opinion of how a resume should be done and how the military experience should translate. Come to find out, it was of no use at all. It did not give me enough information on how to best format my resume or even how to fully translate what I did in the Marines into civilian terms.

The unknown frequent misconduct of military hazing

Matthew Liptak | August 22, 2009

Anyone who has been in any branch of the military service can tell one or two stories about an initial “hazing” incident that they encountered or were part of when they first entered joined. There are hundreds of instances that I myself were a part of or were a victim of when I first got stationed in California 20 years ago. It was part of the ritual of indoctrinating a newbie joining a unit.

The plight of the Homeless Veteran

Matthew Liptak | August 16, 2009

I see it everyday, the person standing by the traffic light intersection holding the sign with the words “VETERAN” written across it. I dig in my pocket to come up with any cash I can to hand over. It is not that I don’t think that what is written is not true on the sign but I can’t think that. I cringe at the sight of more and more signs along roads begging to be helped. What is it about the homeless veteran and why can’t we do anything about it?
